Most Australian buildings have T8 Fluorescent lights in them with a flicker rate of 50 hz or flickers per second. This is very close to the cycle of the brain. Our brain can unconsciously register this flicker rate and at the end of the day, this can contribute to tiredness and even headaches. In Europe they have electronic ballasts to change the flicker rate from 50 Hertz (flickers per second) to 40,000 (or 40kilohertz) cycles per second. This can have a dramatic effect and result in less tiredness and headaches. When one combines the improved flicker rate of teh electronic ballast with the virtues of Full Spectrum Lighting we begin to see a truly useful, natural products.
Essentially Full Spectrum Lighting is sunlight with the Ultra Violet A & B left in and the UV C (suntan, sunburn, Cancer) taken out. In Northern Europe where people have to deal with teh long winters Full Spectrum lighting has become the norm and they help those who otherwise would be straddled with Winter
Seasonal Syndrom (SADS). In Australia we have not had to resort to Full Spectrum Lighting till just recently when the doctors began to tell people to stay out of the sun. As a result just recently the CSIRO announced on the radio on Radio National that Australia was in fear of becoming epedemic in Vitamin D deficiency. This is true, but worst still is the possibility of the accumulation of another potential problem, the one of melatonin shortage, nationally. It stands to reason that if one is short of Vitamin D3 due to a shortage of sunlight then one would most likely also be deficient in Melatonin too.
The reason this is problematic is that Melatonin is our sleep regulator. If one does not get enough Melatonin, we still usually sleep but more of a REM sleep. WE need the deep sleep as this is where our immune system rebuilds itself and our cell replication and subdivision occurs. Melatonin is reported to be one our bodies best immune defences against Cancer too.
Having Full Spectrum Light tubes implies that if we get the UV frequencies into our retina where it needs to be to in order to stimulate the pineal gland, then we will then be also producing Vit. D3, melatonin bs well as stimulating the endocrine system as well.
This is base upon the work of Dr. John Ott and the amazing information in Dr. Jacob Liberman's book Light, Medicine of the Future.
Feel Better, Work Better
With Viva-Lite®, a lack of concentration due to ill-lit rooms can always be counterbalanced: Eyestrain, headaches and fatigue can be kept at bay by minimizing the otherwise adverse effects of light and electro-magnetic pollution. Stress, aggressiveness, hyperactivity and difficulty in learning are not uncommon and many people believe this is a result of the constant low-level light flickering 50hz or cycles a second, and bad lighting, which can trigger stress.
Viva-Lite® aims to lower stress levels, reduce light flicker headaches by lowering illness rates amongst staff.
Where the health benefits of Viva-Lite® already have made a big difference:
- Schools, kindergardens, rest homes, universities
- Hospitals
- Offices and homes
- Factories, especially for shiftworkers
Visible Colour Fidelity
Typical businesses and industries that realized the importance of good color fidelity are:
- Retail stores (clothing, jewellery, florists etc.)
- Dental industry (dentists or laboraties)
- Graphic design, photo and printing industries
- Art galleries and museums
Visible Economical Benefits
And then there are the statistics: Viva-Lite® full spectrum lights have an extraordinarily long lifespan while being low on power consumption. If Viva-Lite® full spectrum tubes are used in combination with the so-called electronic ballasts, besides mere savings on power of about 1/3 one can expect even a longer lifespan for the tubes – mostly double the normal lifespan, in other words, onetime less for change of tubes.
Studies also indicate that by using lamps with a high colour reproduction / rendering index (Ra / Cri), generally less lamps need to be installed as reading and working falls easier under such lights ultimately saving cost and energy alike.
Obvious cost savings, increased efficiency and productivity have been observed by:
- Farmers, especially poultry farming
- Zoo's and animal homes (especially parrots and special birds)
- Nurseries and green houses
- Offices, hospitals and the retail industry
